There are several different mechanisms for CO detectors, it sounds like electrochemical is the most popular, this is also called "fuel cell" (yes, like the kind that produces electricity). It really can expire after 10 years.
Ionization detectors are not so much used any longer, they tended to false a lot, people didn't like having americium end up in landfills, and there was the "radioactive boy scout". These days a photoelectric detector is used.
Besides evaporation of the electrolyte in electrochemical sensors, being coated with gunk, and corroding as likely sensor failure modes; the electronic components do not last forever. In particular, the lifetime of electrolytic capacitors is quite finite and often overestimated.

This particular unit was installed in March 2016, and so I would doubt (and hope) that age has not been to blame.
As it turns out, someone was spending the night in our TM when the alarm went off, and upon further interrogation ( ), I learned that they had just used the bathroom just prior to the alarm going off, and then went to the kitchen sink where they used some hand sanitizer (which are nearly all universally ethanol, as this one was). So, my theory was that, in this instance, that's what set it off.

Electrochemical sensors detect carbon. Alcohol has lots of it.

As to setting off the alarm. I was using a can of compressed gas that I've used for my computer keyboard cleaning. I brought it to clean dust from a Mr. Heater buddy, and after a few seconds of usage, my Safe-T-Alert alarm went off. Shocked me and a camping buddy came over and asked what was wrong. After fanning some air with a towel at the panel the alarm shut off. Further reading on the can says it contains; difluoroethane. Who knew...or for that fact what that is either. Won't be using compressed air cans in the camper any more.

1,1-difluoroethane, refrigerant 152a, a hydroflourocarbon. Reported to cause cardiac arrest if you huff it, but maybe we should think of that as evolution in action. It's in all of those duster cans.

I have not been able to find a replacement for my 70-772 CO/Propane detector. I called the company and they said it is on back order. Does anyone know of a direct replacement?

I've always found them reliable and a great place to shop for RV parts. YMMV
