My numbers would probably be closer to Mark's, if it wasn't for SoCal traffic.

Your mileage tends to drop when your sitting on the 405 freeway.

405 is the only place I remember being in a traffic jam at 2 am.

I always have a topper/cap on my pickups, and it DOES help with drag. Even with the added 190+ lbs., it still improves gas mileage a little.

The frustrating thing is my A.R.E Z-series top will NOT fit on F150's newer than 2008, due to redesign. New ones are $2300!

I hear ya, Dave. I'm glad I didn't want that type of bed cover when I was looking. The cab height shell makes the F150 look like a Expedition, IMHO. I opted for the Undercover tri-fold hard lid. Secures and locks my gear, folds up to the cab to carry tall cargo and has some of the benefits of less wind resistance, but the best two reasons I like it are, my truck still looks like a truck, not an SUV and it was a third of the co$t of a camper shell.

I'll second having a Tonneau cover, I got the Extang Solid Fold for a good price from Amazon. It's nice being able to lock the bed and it just may help the mileage.
I always use premium gasoline when I tow the TM. That may help the mileage as well.

It depends on the fuel and advance maps whether premium will help. My Jeep is a flexfuel so has the maps that would accomodate premium but an engine designed for 87 may not run as well.

Gasoline has the same btu/pound (power) regardless of octane. The purpose of high octane is to avoid detonation which is not an issue with direct injection. However to avoid detonation 93 also burns slower than 87 which means for best power/economy it needs more advance (back in the day we used to bump the timing about 6-8 degrees when running premium (can see it in the manufacturer's specs back then) to accomodate for the slower burn.

Today all of that is handled by the computer but an engine designed for 87 may not provide enough advance for 93 and you have no way to adjust it. If so both power and mpg will get worse, not better.

Could tell by monitoring both with Torque Pro and by watching the advance but is hard to tell without proper instrumentation. As a consequence it is best to follow the manufacturers recommendations unless you buy a tune for something different.

Running E-85 in our flex fuel, mpg goes through the floor. Always run 87 unless we can't get it then switch to 89. Don't see any difference as far as mpg. The only place it drops is with E-85 or those places that don't have 87 but sell 86 instead.
