Then there was the time I had to use the jack and my battery was dead. Plugged into shore power and went ahead, didn't seem to harm anything. Maybe I was lucky, or are the newer converters better at handling that situation? I've never paid any attention to it, I'm wondering if I need to now?

That problem existed in the old Magnetek Parallax converters, which TM stopped using in 2005 or 2006. If your TM is newer, or if you have replaced your converter, you should be OK.
