Little or No Problem
Last October/November my wife, another couple, and I made a 3 week trip from Jacksonville/Gainesville, FL to Los Angeles area via the Grand Canyon. We did not make reservations as we had no idea for sure where we would be when. We tended to stay in State Parks. A couple of evenings we stopped somewhere that there was a special event in the park, but they still found a spot for us. In the Los Angeles area we stopped at a KOA that was booked full -- there was drag racing going on -- so they called around and found us another nearby campground that still had some spots left. Turned out to be nicer!
One tool we used was the free Oh Ranger! application. It is for most smartphones and is also a web app. It lists and maps State and National parks. We would start looking about an hour before we were ready to stop. We would find a campground that was ahead of us on our route.
