Default Electric slideout notes

Our TM, built in the South Dakota factory, has a power slide-out - and we love it. During our recent week camped in Colorado, a couple questions came up, and Jacob at the factory was kind enough to answer them for us.

Q1. The power slide in our 2020 2720QS is getting a bit noisy as it slides. It obviously needs to be lubed, but I’m not sure what lube to apply, or where to apply it. Can you help me?
A1. We use silicone spray lube. Extend the slide and give the track on the bottom of the slide a good spray.

Q2. In the event of a dead battery, blown fuse, or mechanical problem, can I release the drive mechanism and push/pull the slide manually, as was done in earlier trailers?
A2. You need to remove one 9/16 inch bolt. Crawl under the trailer and locate the slide motor towards the front of the trailer. Next to the motor is the bolt. Remove it, and pull the motor to the side. The slide will move without the motor.

Thanks, Jacob!

This is good information, almost makes me want to get a new TM. Alas, I'm just a poor starving teacher.

On the note of silicone spray though. I used to spray car door seals with silicone spray, but the stuff is usually more solvent than silicone, and it goes everywhere. Then I discovered an ACDelco silicone lube paste that is applied using an included foam brush. It was a bit clumpy, but you didn't have overspray, it didn't dribble over your fingers, it didn't smell up the car, and it was way easier to control. I'd spread on with the sponge, then use a cloth to smear it evenly over the seals.

I wonder it this type of product might be worth considering?

I see that 3M sells a similar product (3M 08946):

I like the sound of that stuff, for some places where I have been using white lithium grease. But not necessarily for this application. A film of grease attracts dirt, and I wouldn't want a greasy dirty strip on both sides of my living room.

Lowes used to sell a dry teflon (not silicone) spray lube that I liked a lot. Either Dupont Teflon Multi-Use Semi-Dry Lube, or DuPont Teflon Non-stick Dry Film Lubricant, I think - I no longer have a can. It was great on the screws of the stabilizer jacks, for instance, where lube is needed but grit is a bad idea. Last time I was in Lowes (so long ago!) I couldn't find it, so I bought a can of Blaster. Wasn't thrilled with it, so I bought a can of Boeshield T-9. It seems to work better than the Blaster, but not as well as the DuPont stuff.

It appears that Lowes no longer carries the DuPont stuff, but other places do, so I will go back to it when I can find it. DuPont makes a lot of similar-sounding stuff, so if you go looking for it, shop carefully. The word "Dry" will signal the right one.

My go-to dry lube is "WD-40 Specialist Dirt & Dust Resistant Dry Lube PTFE Spray with SMART STRAW SPRAYS 2 WAYS, 10 OZ". 5 bucks-ish on Amazon. It works really well in all situations I've tried it in. i just sprayed it on my ATV plow and snow blower in anticipation of the blizzard landing on us now. For me it's worked much better than silicone and better than the dry teflon sprays.

That sounds like a great solution. I've got an Amazon order going out today - I'll try it. Thanks for the tip.

Concerning the lubrication of the slide-out, how does one get to the rollers underneath the slide to lubricate them with the spray. Does the whole slide-out just tip over? If so, do I need to be concerned about it coming out of or off of the track?

Thanks,
Ed

The following is from the manually-operated slide of my earlier TMs. I believe that the new electric slide is the same, except that you have to be aware of the slide mechanism (track? chain?) as you lift it and pull it out.

From outside the camper, start with the slide all the way in. You should be able to lift the front edge of the slide, and then insert a block or a hunk of board to hold it up. I don't believe it is fastened down in any way. While it is propped up, you should be able to see the rollers right at the front edge of the floor. Also, you should see the wooden stop blocks fastened to the floor right at the front.

To get access to the slide's rear wheels, pull the slide out all the way, hunker down, and repeat the operation. I recall that you could pull the entire slide out of the body of the camper if you lifted it up over the stop blocks.

I couldn't get the slide to lift up, it was very heavy even with the couch seat section and back removed, so I let the slide out all the way and lifted the rubber air seal at the front edge of the slide and sprayed everything I could see that I thought might be a part of something that moved. Then I crawled under the TM on the outside and did the same thing from that vantage point. Then sprayed the inside aluminum floor/wall tracks on both sides, and no more squeaks!

I used the WD-40 Specialist Dirt & Dust Resistant Dry Lube PTFE Spray that was mentioned a few posts back in this same thread.

Thanks to all who contributed.
