Default Towing Elkmont Bunkhouse 24'with 3500lb capacity

Has anyone pulled an Elkmont Bunkhouse with a mini van (I have a Kia Sedona 2012) rated at 3500lb towing capacity. Since this has more wind resistance than the folding trailers was wondering how successful a 3500lb towing capacity vehicle does with this trailer. Thankyou, marcojim

As always, the first question has to be "Where do you plan to tow?"

Next question has to be "How many people in your camping party?"

My Elkmont 24 weighs in at 3800# with all our gear. Others have weighed in with less but I don't know how they do it.

I wouldn't feel comfortable towing with anything less than a 5000# rating. My Tacoma has a 6500# rating.

I tow my Elkmont with a Buick Enclave with a 4500 lb tow rating. I would not tow it with anything less. It tows fine without any temperature issues as long as I keep the altitude below 4500 feet. I would not tow the Elkmont with my rig in higher elevations.

The hitch on my truck is rated for 5200 lb., and the Chevy Traverse, a sister vehicle to the Enclave, is rated at the full 5200 lb. tow capacity. According to GM, both vehicles have similar braking capabilities, but the Traverse's cooling design allows it to tow the extra 700 lb. above the Buick.

I towed an Elkmont 24 from Dallas to Tucson with a 2007 Santa Fe, about 1000 miles. We had been told by Texas RV that the unit weighed only 2500 #. Back in Tucson we discovered that the trailer weighed 3600# empty. The tongue weight was about 600#. I e3nded up getting a V6 Silverado with a tow cap of 5200#. The Elkmont GVWR is 4200#. Your hitch is probably a 3500# hitch with a tongue cap of 500#. Does this tell you what you want to know? Besides, the Kia is FW driven. I "used" about 15000 miles of rubber on that 1000 mile trip towing my Elkmont home.

DON'T DO IT.

Just my opinion.

From what I've been reading I'm inclined to agree. Thankyou, marcojim

From what I'm reading that is good advice. Thankyou, marcojim

You and others have given the same negative replies. I have towed a 2619 with a Sienna 3.2 v6 and that labored in the hills of northern Florida. Don't want to go through that again. Thankyou, marcojim
