I think the idea about the truck bed length is really about the actual measurement from the rear truck axle back to the point where the trailer tongue connects. The shorter the better as far as minimizing the see-saw effect that makes the front of the truck rise with the trailer connected.
But then again, the wheelbase, distance from rear axle to front axle is an equally important factor in this, the longer the better.

Finally someone who gets it. I find the best towing cars/trucks have at least a 3:1 ratio of wheelbase to distance from the rear axle to the hitch ball. (My GC has a 115" wb and is 38" from axle to ball)

Okaaay, but walking this discussion back a dozen or so, we were talking about extended cab versus crew cab trucks, and why one version may (or may not) be better for towing. To reiterate (at least for Ford's): wheelbase the same. Distance from rear axle to ball, the same. So the difference between the two is a personal one (people versus cargo), but I can't see any difference in towing characteristics.

Agreed. My objection to the Extended Cab vs Crew Cab (way back in post #4) was not towing-related. I should have made that more clear.

Not from what I am seeing unless you are limiting to specific models. There are at least two wheelbases for a current Ford F-150: 122.4" and 141.1", length: 209.3" and 227.9". Since the deltas are the same, the longer wheelbase may tow better.
I prefer something smaller but the EcoBoost 3.5 looks like a nice engine.

Sigh.... Two thoughts. 1. Go back and re-read post #16. The correct wheelbase for the Supercab (extended) and Super Crew (crew cab) is 145" not 141.1" Both cabs are built on the exact same frame. 2. Stop looking at "regular cab" dimensions. There's only one of those trucks, and it's in a museum somewhere. They used to be called "work trucks," but now even people who work out of a truck for their living don't want a regular cab.
