Default Towing with a Hitch Extension ?

Great Site and thanks for everyone who posts.

Has Anyone used a hitch extension during a long trip? My Trailmanor which is a 2518 has to be unhitched in order to open it up. I need is a 16in hitch extension to open up my 2518 while still being attached to my truck. I am going on a 2500 mile round trip and would like to leave the tow vehicle attached during short overnight stops and try to avoid the hitch un hitch dance with my wife.
Any help would be great. Thanks

With an Expedition, you probably do not have a WDH, especially since you are towing a smaller TM. That being the case, I would think that a hitch extension would be OK. I would be less enthusiastic if you had a WDH. Have you identified a source for an extension?

No not yet, Still looking. Northern tool caries a few types. I am going there Tuesday to check it out. I do not know anyone that has ever used one.

Any increase of the distance between the hitch ball and the rear axle is going to take more weight off of the front axle, maybe to the point of needing a WDH. With most WDHs that I have seen, the hitch ball sits well back of a standard dropped hitch, so why not just go with a WDH system.......a little more expensive, but I believe you will appreciate it when installed.

Just my .02 worth.

Hello Everyone,
It turns out that when My Truck is Square with my 2518 I can Open it up without an extension . This is the first Level Pull thru site I have had the privilege to visit. All the State parks have not been level, and my driveway is semicircle. I still put the jack stabilizers down as well as the ball foot down and take the some of the pressure off of the truck. Seems okay so far we just set up.
This is great, no dancing the hitch tango with the wife tonight, just cold drinks and relaxation. I will look for pull thrus on my quick overnights from now on.
Thanks to Bill and Mountainguy for the advice.
