15" Tire Pressure

Having just made the switch to from 14" to 15" wheels with Marathon tires I am curious as to the tire pressure those of you with this combo have settled on. We are pulling a 2720SL. The dealer put in 60 lbs., which seems to be in the ball park.

I looked at the placard on the side of my Elkmont which has 15” wheels and it calls for 65PSI. I think it weights less than the 2720 SL.

I put 60 psi in my 15-inch Marathons. Not for any particular reason, but just to try it. It seems to work well on our cross-country trips (mostly Interstate highways). If I were going to be driving on bumpier roads, I might drop it to 55 psi, or even 50 psi, just to get a softer ride and prevent things from shaking or pounding so badly in the TM.

I routinely carry 65 lbs in my 15" Marathons on my 3124 KB. They are still the original tires, as far as I know, and seem to still be in good shape. It was too cold this past weekend on our first trip out with the camper to do a good inspection. We'll be out again in 2 weeks and hopfully it will be warmer and I can do a further inspection, including crawling under to check the spare.

Feeling lucky, eh? 2003 TM, possibly made in 2002 with tires possibly made in 2001. That means tires 6-8 years old. Yikes. Knowing what I know now, that would make me nervous.

Yep - I'm watching them pretty close this year. I'm well aware of the 5 year life expectancy of the Marathons.

Fortunately we only have one trip planned this year with an extended distance to travel. On my last trailer - a Starcraft popup - I got 10 years out of the Carlisle 13" tires. But we had blowouts on both tires on the same trip - don't want that to happen again.

Just bought new batteries so hoping I don't have to spring for tires this year as well.

My Marathons lasted 4 years. One year collecting dust in a warehouse and three years of using it.

I do not think that I will attempt to reach a 4 year anniversary with trailer tires. DW was towing when the tire blew on the freeway. Sometimes DS (26) or DD (28) tow. I prefer that they not experience trailer tire blow outs. I have some confidence that I could handle the situation, but why expose them to the same risk.

Got 1 1/2 years @ 8k miles before one blew.
Have 15" now, keep 60 to 62 psi.
Have 11k on them, with another 5 planned this year.
I'll post if we encounter problems.

Just finished a 5,000 mile trip out west with our 4 year old 3124 with Marathon 225/15 tires. Blew both original tires on this trip. I used to inflate to 55, but upped that to 65 based on the tire manual (appears elsewhere on the forum). Both tires failed due to steel belts separating. Fortunately, both were slow leaks and we found them before actually blowing out. After talking to the tire dealer and reading the manual, if you plan on going fast (ie 65 or so), you need to carry the full 65 psi (cold). The other issue that the tire dealer said could be a factor was letting the trailer sit over the winter (I let it sit for almost 5 month in one spot, all weight on the tires). I will change that habit. Also, the original wheels do not appear to have ever been balanced. I'd recommend you do that. I had both new tires and wheels balanced.

Our 3023 says tire pressure should be 65psi & since there has been so much talk about tire failures I am following this to the letter.
