I replaced the anode rod today and I think Dave was right that it was corroded anode rod material clogging the aerator. I used Shane's method for flushing the tank and it was quick and easy. I'll start replacing the rod annually to avoid clogs or water heater issues in the future. Thanks to all for your help and advice.
