Larry, smell wasn't the driving factor. My first camper was a pop up and I had a cassette with that camper. I didn't like having to charge the line before closing. I've got the dump issue resolved, so it's not a big headache.

We replaced our recirculating with a marine toilet. Quite a job but well worth it

Marine toilets simply have a holding tank for the waste. Unlike a recirculating toilet they use a separate water source to flush the waste. Buses, trains and planes use marine toilets.

Toilet retrofits is a big topic, and inquiring minds want to know.

Which marine toilet did you choose for your retrofit?

Since a TM won't accommodate a black tank under the floor, is the black tank part of the toilet itself? Or is it a standalone unit located outside (or maybe behind?) the toilet?

What is the capacity (gallons) of the black tank?

For dumping, is the black tank plumbed into the standard TM under-floor drain valve?

Or is there no black tank - the toilet immediately discharges overboard, using some kind of macerator pump, at every use? I'm looking at one from Thetford, and another from Dometic, that seem to operate this way.

So like a Dometic SeaLand toilet? That was originally for use on boats.

Before the CG clamped down, we had ordinary 5 gal. flush toilets on commercial vessels and just flushed straight out too sea. Now and even more so on recreational vessels, a tank down below holds all the waste until it can be pumped to shore. So yep, the marine toilets were originally designed for inland waterways vessels, trains, buses and planes ( at one time even planes just dumped while airnorne). Those were the good old days, back when kids just stood up in the front bucket seat, a safety restraint was your mother putting her arm out to keep you from banging your head on the windshield. When you treated for termites, it lasted a hundred years and the runoff protected the entire neighborhood (kind of like a little Chernobyl and no termites).

When wife and I first bought our new TM in 2011 the thought of a recirculating toilet sounded disgusting and others had complained about the odor. So, before we ever used the system, I totally removed the TM toilet, plugged the drainage hole, built a wooden riser box that is about 4" tall (we're tall people) and has a 1" lip around it to keep a marine (cassette) toilet from sliding around. We bought A "Thetford Curve" toilet (larger adult-size seat, battery-operated flush and 5-gallon waste holding tank) and have been more than pleased with the results. Every 3 - 4 days, I simply disconnect the top section of the toilet (which holds the rinse water) from the lower waste section (which has a handle), and carry it over to the campground toilet to dump it out. If the site has full hook-ups, I simply dump the waste cassette into the sewer hole. Where most of our TM buddies will either have to tear down the trailer to take it to the dump station or will only camp 3 -4 days because of this issue, we're able to camp as long as a we wish (usually 2-week stints).

+1 we did exactly the same and were very satisfied. Yes, an extra "step" if you have full hookups, but absolutely invaluable for when you don't--which was >90% of our trips.
