Default Spare Tire Question

I purchased new 15 wheels and tires. I also have a new 15" wheel and tire for the spare. I was not sure it would fit. But it seems to fit just fine. My old spare was 15 years old and not the same size so I did decide to get the new spare. After that many years it showed some rub marks but no gouges or wear. My new tire and rim are even tighter that the old. I do not foresee this as a problem. Does anyone think there is a drawback to this tight fit? I have read about adjusting the spare holder, but it really doesn't look like I need to do that.

Is your spare mounted on the back bumper? I wonder if it would be safe to go with the 15x5 wheel for the spare, kind of like the auto space saver. I know it's too late for you to consider this, but if I switch to 15" wheels... I had not thought of the space for the spare.

Casey -

The fact that they fit is not surprising. The 205 tires - 14" and 15", Marathon and Endurance, all have the same width - 8". Moving from Marathon to Endurance increased your load-bearing capacity - a good thing. If you had moved to any of the 215 or 225 sizes, the width would be greater.

Any 205 tire should be the same width measurement in millimeters. And just quick lesson, the second number is called the aspect ratio, which is the sidewall height measured as percentage of the width. Obviously the last number is the rim size. So if you keep the width the same, and adjust the aspect ratio to compensate for a larger rim, you can keep the overall wheel & tire assembly the same size.
