Default Towing with FWD

Does anyone tow a TM with front wheel drive? If so does a wdh transfer enough weight to the front axle to give good traction to the front wheels. Looking at purchasing a 2720,3124 or a 3326. I have a 2010 pathfinder with rear wheel drive but a also considering purchasing a 2013 pathfinder. Or do I need to go with all wheel drive? I will be towing in Fl, Ga, and maybe a little in Tenn.

Thanks for your feedback,

Mark

When Nissan says "properly equipped, the Pathfinder can tow 5000 lbs" I wonder if that includes the 4wd option or just the tow package? You should have no issues if "properly equipped", and yes a WDH can put the proper weight onto the front axle. Nice looking SUV.

The CVT tranny in a TV is something new to me, does it do well towing?

The 2013 Pathfinder is rated at #5000 in fwd and awd versions. Towing with a cvt is another question, jury is probable still out on that. The tow package does include a secondary fan to cool the transmission.

Thanks for the reply.

Is there a reason for not using the 2010 Pathfinder? We bought a 2012 4Runner rwd and it tows beautifuly without any wdh or sway control! If I am correct the 2010 Pathfinder has a 6,000 lb. capacity! My vote is to keep what you've got and enjoy, unless you don't like it!

We averaged 18.5 MPG all the way to Maine and back in July!

We love the Pathfinder, if the 2013 with fwd tows fine we may keep the 2010 awhile. If the fwd does not tow well we may get a new 2012 since it is rwd and are offering big discounts now.

We have put a lot of miles on the Pathfinder taking our son to the hospital for cancer treatments and surgeries over the past 18 months ( a 400 mile round trip). It is also my wife's daily driver and have averaged 22 MPG.

I should have been a little clearer.

Prayers are on their way for your son's recovery and that you can all relax and enjoy a lot of time camping together!

Where are you in Florida?

I own the 2010 Pathfinder and it tows very nice on my 2720SD. I do not use a WDH. But I also understand your situation with the higher mileage on your Pathfinder.

You are right, the jury is out on the CVT transmission and inherently it would seem to be more dainty in towing, hence the 1000 pound reduction in towing capacity.

I turn my towing vehicles over every five years and have already thought that my next SUV in 2015 will have to be the Nissan Armada or the Toyota 4Runner. The dog gone cost of the Armada is a $12k jump from the Pathfinder price. Ouch!! Then again, the cost of ownership is reasonable on both of these vehicles.

I tow our 3200 pop up with my Ridgeline with 90K miles on it with no problems. The ridgeline starts in AWD and when it decides your fine (usually 12-18 MPH if i recall) it switches to FWD only. This towing includes some pretty serious passes here in Alaska.

All cvt's are not created the same. I forget the definitions as explained to me by an Infiniti and Lexus dealer, but the "cheaper" ones are stressed by more frequent towing while the other kind is not. For example they admitted that frequent towing would be bad for the drive train on the Murano, but not on the system used by Infiniti or Lexus. I think the Murano has a belt drive and the others are hydraulic. So it would depend which one Nissan chose to put on the Pathfinder.
