Default Cross county trips

We, Helen and I, did two cross country trips. One in 2005 and another in 2009. The first started in Raleigh, NC and turned toward home at Hover Dam (5500 miles and 55 days). Visiting many national parks along the way. Only one tire problem. On this trip we learned that you cannot run the frig on DC and dry camp that night with a fully charged battery.

The last trip took us from Raleigh to Yellowstone, Glacier, Banff, Vancouver, Seattle, then back to NC. (9000 miles and 60 days) No problems except for heat, cold, rain, sleet and hail.

Plus we do several short trips each year. We try to plan our trips out. Looking for camping with water and elecrtic and make reservations on weekends. We keep a Excel spread sheet with planned campground stops, phone numbers and directions. We try not to drive more than 300 miles in between campgrounds and spend several days at places that we want to visit. We always make regular checks before hitting the road.

Next trip is to Maine and the Canadian martimes. This trip will check off the last of the lower 48 we visited.

HINT: Always check on ferry charges and tolls when pulling the TM. The fees were close to $300 to go to Vancouver Island, BC, CAN and back with the TM. We bypassed that excursion.

Have made a couple of 3500 mi ish trips and am leaving for the DW's family reunion in WI tomorrow.

So far, the only flat was on a local trip. KNOCK ON WOOD!!

Rule #11 IS RIGHT ON!

I'd like to leave the TM attached overnight but always seem to have to unhook to level fore and aft.

As far as distance traveled per day goes, 7 hours is all my butt can tolerate!

Didn't there used to be a campground rating thread or did I see that some where else?

I've done Wyoming/Colorado to Pennsylvania four times, Colorado to Edmonton, AB once, and several other trips > 1,500 miles. I've never had any mechanical problems on any of the trips (knock on wood) nor tire blowouts.

I'm usually one of the slowest vehicles on the road - I just pull over when safe if I have cars following on the two-lane roads.

I look over both tow vehicle and trailer at every gas stop. I always check the hitch after being parked somewhere, in case some joker pulled a pin on me.

All of this is pretty minor - the most important thing: remember to have fun. That means being flexible with schedules, not trying to do too much road in a day, and if you are tired, finding a place to stop to sleep.

I also try to make the first day a short day where I'll "camp" somewhere near a Wal-Mart so I can pick up what I inevitably forgot.

Virginia has a new state law which says you MUST have a lock on your ball coupler.

Walking around the TV after you stop and b4 you get underway is a great habit to get into.

My DW is nerd enough to have a VERY detailed check list for trips. Me, on the other hand.........

Our 3124 went MD to FL and back once, and MD to WI and MI and back.

Our longest trip so far in the 3326 was getting it home from TN to FL. Expensive too, because of a blown turbo intercooler on the way!

Default St Louis to ...

Mackinaw City via WI and across UP, down to Presque Isle and return thru Alpena, Lansing, Ft Wayne and Indy.

Dove Lake Michigan and Huron. Sight seeing at Wisconsin lake front, UP, Mackinaw City, Mackinaw Island, Presque Isle, and Alpena.

2000 miles driven, three campgrounds. Stopped in WI on way up. Two 7-hour days. Drove straight thru from Alpena to St Louis to be back and move kids into school. 11 hours driving. Slept 2-hours like a baby while DW drove and I was good to finish.
