Thanks for the advice, Ed-n-KEL. We are planning Smoky Mountain trip first, then Key West, Arkansas and New England over the next couple years, don't think those will have too high of elevations other than SM and already plan to camp at bottom. Hopefully we will be ready to tackle longer trips after that. These were our retirement destinations in three to four years plus cross country to Alaska but bad job market forced my husband to retire early so watching the pennies much closer now, not sure we will make the last trip. Also the reason we have low budget to purchase TM but saw 1997 that looks in pretty good shape so want to take trip to check it out soon if still available. My mom lives in that area so going that way anyway. Happy camping to all and again, thank you for all the useful information. Roni

Campground at the bottom of the Grand Canyon? You'll probably have to settle for the top of the canyon, Roni. The roads leading into the area are going to be in the 5,000 to 7,000 foot range of elevation, depending on which way you come in. The Park entrance and the roads are all at the top of the canyon, with no way to drive down -- hiking or on mule back being the main ways available to get to the bottom. But your Dakota will likely handle that just fine.

You might want to explore this web site for more information about the Canyon and its Park.

Sounds like you have a plan!

Back in June we did a week in Petit Jean SP, just west of Little Rock.
Great place!

Good luck!
