Default WDH 600 vs 800 lbs. spring bars

In preparation for picking up our new 3023 next week, I want to purchase a WDH as highly recommended by other forum members. My questions is should I pay the extra $150 or so for a Reese or Draw-Tite brand with 600 lb. spring bars that is recommended by a local hitch dealer for the weight of a 3023, or would I be just as happy with an imported Robin brand that is available with 1000 lb. bars as the lightest option? I will be towing with a 2005 4 Runner 4.0 V-6. The Robin units are available on E-Bay for $189 including shipping.

Thanks, John

One of our members - I think RockyMtnRay, who was our towing expert in the early days - found that 600 pound bars were too light. He had a 2720SL.

I can only repeat what I was told by the dealer, they found the Reese Pro with 1000 lb springs to work best on all of the TM's....of course they were trying to sell me one. It seems to work great though on the 2619. They were selling it for $225.

I had the Reese 800 lb. bars on my Trailmanor, and seemed to be just about the right weight....plenty of stiffness for weight distibuting, but not too stiff that it made for a bad ride in the TV.

We have Eazlift hitch with 1000lb bars. I reconfigured the hitch from towing our other trailer, a Layton 190 LT.
Towing with the same veh., 2008 Toyota 4 Runner V 8, I find the TM tows much smoother than the Layton.
I am still adjusting but on our last trip I had the spring bars in the #4 link, since returning home I have moved the hitch down one hole and moved the ball back slighltly.
I found I was towing the TM with the nose ever so slightly up and this is my attempt at getting it dead level, I have not hooked up yet to seek level ground to check it out.
I may be able to move to #3 link, but if not it was still very smooth except for a streatch of concrete around Ashville N.C..

Thanks everyone for the information and tips. I ordered a Quality-S trunnion style WDH today with 800 lb. bars. I am comfortable that this will work well with our 3023. Since we will not be taking long trips (week or more) for the first year or so, I plan to go with only one propane tank and we will be traveling light as a general rule. Even if I add the additional tank, I feel that I will have reserve capacity with the 800 lb. bars.

I will post how things go concerning the tow home from the dealer--about 200 miles next week.

Thanks, John
