Default Corner latch

Our rear driver’s corner latch has come loose. It’s the upper portion with 2 screws. I was planning on reinstalling it with gorilla glue and two new screws of the same size just above the original location. Since I’m not sure what the screws are going into structurally in the shell, I wanted to ask if there is a better way to reattach it?
I appreciate any advice.

Joe,

I believe there is wood in place into which the screws for the corner latch anchor can be securely attached. I don't know for sure, but assume it would be large enough in area to accommodate the positioning of the anchor. The thumbnail shows the repair that MCD in West Yarmouth, MA came up with to repair my corner latch anchor several years ago. The repair has stabilized the corner latch anchor. There are generally two reasons the anchor tends to fail; 1) the latch is too tight putting too much stress on the anchor; 2) water infiltration behind the anchor or around the screws. The latch is adjustable using the threaded extension. Unfortunately I don't have any dimensions or screw sizes since I was not present when the repair was done. Feel free to contact MCD for assistance - they have been and continue to be an authorized TM dealer.

Dick

The problem is the latch hooks (and the repair shown above) just screw into the aluminum skin. There’s not much for the screw to bite.

Here’s what I did… Go to Lowe’s and get some post bolts. Then drill THROUGH the wall. Put the post bolt sleeve in through the back of the wall with a washer, screw in the bolt from the front. Of course add some sort of sealant into the holes as well. This makes the entire wall support the latch hook, not just the outer skin. And they are below the bag seals so you don’t see them from inside.

Here are pictures of exactly what I used from Lowe’s…

I rather like Dick's repair. Looks like they coated the plate with JB Weld or something similar and then secured it to the skin with sheet metal screws. The pull on the anchor is distributed downward and not outward. I have a plate ( albeit larger) similarly attached to the shell of my 2720 with D rings which I use to secure my kayak. Never had any issues.

Shane, your repair looks god too. You can always put sealant or gasket behind the hook plate. My front curb side screws have been loose a couple times and keeping it properly adjusted is the most important part.

I've often wondering how some 3M VHB tape might work to attach a backing plate like what is pictured in Dick's post. That way, no new holes, and quite possibly, a stronger repair. The tape holds solar panels against 70 MPH wind....
