Default Why does the GFI in the campground (or garage) trip?

This question has come up a few times over the years. To diagnose it, the standard procedure is to turn off the TM's circuit breakers one at a time, to identify the appliance that has the short. And it is pretty mysterious when, even with all the breakers including the main breaker turned off, the GFI still trips. How can this happen? It always generates discussion, only some of which is helpful to the owner with the problem.

As we've gone through all this, I have found another reason for annoyance trips - one that I have never seen written up. I've mentioned it in a few posts, but the short version usually generates some skepticism. So I decided to do a hopefully professional-grade article, complete with accompanying figures, to explain it. It is made up of 2-1/2 pages of text and four simple wiring diagrams, all attached below. It is kind of dry and technical, but if you're curious about this problem, dig in.

Comments and questions are always welcome.
