Default Dinette table hinge supports stripped from inside wall

Hello!

On our New Years outing to Borrego Springs east of San Diego, a second screw in one of the supports for the rod that allows the dinette table to pivot up/down stripped out of its hole.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Either use a larger diameter screw, or use some type of wall reinforcement?

Any ideas/suggestions are welcome.

My suggestion is to not attach it. Do this mod instead and it becomes a freestanding table.

I would use a rivet nut, which is basically a nut with some rubber around it that expands when compressed. Basically, you drill a large hole in the wall (say 1/2"), press in the rivet nut, and then screw in a machine screw attaching the table. As the screw goes in, the rubber expands behind the hole, preventing it from coming out.

I've used them for this very application and it has not since budged. Apparently they are used to mount roof racks to cars.

See: http://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/121/3309/=10junbz

Look at part 93495A111 -- Rubber-Insulated Brass Rivet Nut 115-Piece Assortment in Plastic Box -- it's a big assorted box of them. But you can get smaller quantities for less money.

I'm with Dave about the use of these fasteners. I've used many of them in my TM, including and especialy where the SL folding tables have come loose from the wall. As you think about them, you should be aware of a loose terminology that is applied to them. I've not seen the McMaster-Carr usage before, though I won't argue with it.

In other sources, there is a fastener called a RivNut or rivet nut, which has no rubber parts. And there is an entirely different fastener called a well nut, which is almost entirely rubber. If you do a search in this forum, you will find a lot of posts that refer to well nuts, and a few that refer to RivNuts or rivet nuts. In many applications, either one will work, though you might note that a well nut is removable, while a rivet nut is not.
