Default Spare Tire Rack question

We have a 2007 2720SL. Due to some other posts that I read this week I decided that I needed to verify that all is well with my spare tire. It came off easily but I am not sure that I have put it back on correctly.

I have slid the rails in, dropped the two pins through the holes, and then put the cotter pins through the pins. As a result the only thing that is holding ALL of the weight of the tire and the rack are the two light-weight cotter pins.

Is the rack supposed to lock in more securely or are we just supposed to rely on the cotter pins?

Thanks!

Scott

I just went out and looked at my TM...

It appears that the tire support sits on top of an angle iron thats welded to the frame. See if the attached picture helps. The pins are designed to keep the support bar from popping up, they don't carry the weight of the tire.

I've never taken our spare off, and from time to time I miss the mark by a mile, but the aforementioned is my take on it.

Thanks Grill...

I sat there for the longest time just looking at that mount trying to see where I was going wrong. It sure felt different coming off than when it was going on.

Thanks a bunch for taking the time to look and send the pic.
