Lesson Learned on Re-Caulking Trim
I just got back from a trip from San Antonio to Stuart, FL. While driving on I-10 in Mississippi, I was unable to completely miss running over a piece of rubber from a truck tire. The tire piece hit the bottom corner of the drivers side of the TM and the white plastic trim came loose at the bottom. The trim began shaking the in wind and "unzipped" and flew off before I could get safely pulled off the highway. It ended up in the grass median of I-10.
I have re-caulked the roof several times but did not bother to remove and replace the old caulking on the trim. When the piece of tire hit the trim, the old caulking was brittle and broke. Then, the wind got under the bottom of the trim and pull the whole thing off. Fortunately, we were able to find the trim strip and reattach it that evening.
Bottom line, take time to replace the caulking on the trim strips when you work on the roof.
