Wavery- If they are wired as per the schematic, the fridge is definitely linked to the water heater.

That's what I figured. They share the same circuit breaker. My bet is that there is one wire from the breaker box (converter) to that connector box on the front shell connector box or somewhere in the outside w/heater box or behind the fridge. I've got a hunch that one of those wire nuts came loose.
