Default Campsites in Florida

My husband and I are interested in visiting campgrounds in Florida. We have been to Fort DeSoto and it was absolutely awesome. Can anyone recommend any other places in Florida to visit? We would prefer water and electric hookups and dog friendly places. We enjoy being near water and love to hike with our hound dog. Activities aren't important.
We will be leaving for North Carolina in April and plan to camp in the mountains of NC and Tennessee. Any suggestions there would be appreciated also. If anyone can recommend a website or book that would help us out in our research that would be great.
Thanks in advance,
Natalie

Default Florida Parks

Two of our favorites are Highlands Hammach and Long Key park. Highlands has great hiking and camping. Long Key has every campsite within a few feet of the water and is relatively available in the summer. In the winter, both parks need reservations many months in advance. I get most of my info on parks from reserveamerica.com.

We spent a couple of days in Grayton State Park just off Hwy 98 between Pensacola and Fort Walton Beach. This was back in 1984. The beach was great. We pretty well had the park to ourselves over the 4th of July weekend. Also spent a night at Falling Water State Park just south of Interstate 20 and south of the town of Chipley. Best I can remember the camping fee at these parks was $6.00 per night then, but I imagine that's changed. Don't know if this helps. Hope you have a good trip.

I'll second Highland Hammocks - very nice state park. Also have heard that Anastasia State Park around St. Augustine is nice but have never stayed there. St. Augustine is a fun place to visit for a couple of days.

Larry - does Myakka River State Park have camping? We lived in Englewood for a few years and used to drive up there for the day (rented canoes and paddled on the river) but never paid any attention to whether or not they had a campground...

Regards,

Bob

Default Florda parks

Anastasia State Park is very nice. We stayed there January 7 - 11, during the record cold snap. The campground consists of five or six loops, all of which seem to have a variety of sizes and types of sites. Some are very private, surrounded with vegetation, and others are closer together, which would be ideal for camping with groups of friends. Each loop is almost like a little campground unto itself, except that bathhouses are shared by two loops. One thing to note is that the bathhouses do not have heat, and the high top portions are screened in, which can be quite brisk in cold weather! Taking a shower in 36 degree weather is an adventure! However, the water is nice and hot! (Of course, you can use the TM shower, if you prefer.) The park personnel were very nice and helpful. We would definitely go back again. The beautiful beach area is a very short drive or slightly longer walk/bike ride from the campground, where there is a nice little camp store and boardwalk to the beach. The park is very convenient to the historic area of St. Augustine, and there are good restaurants and other conveniences nearby.

Other state park campgrounds we have used in Florida include Curry Hammock SP in the keys, Jonathan Dickinson SP on the east coast, Blue Springs SP between Orlando and Daytona, St. Andrews SP at Panama City Beach, and Big Lagoon SP near Pensacola. We had good experiences with all of them, and they each have their unique advantages and not many disadvantages. We'll be glad to share more details of our impressions of these parks if you're interested. We tend to like state parks better than the commercial RV parks because they are usually offer a more natural and quiet environment with less crowded sites.

We have stayed at Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou (weird name) and Manatee Springs State Parks in the past. Both were nice and would merit a revisit if I were passing through again. From Fred Gannon you can visit (among other things) the aircraft museum at Eglin AFB which was well worth a look if you like that sort of thing.

Default Alafia River State Park

We have stayed at Alafia River state park which is about 45 minutes SE of Tampa. here is a link to the web site http://www.floridastateparks.org/ala...Activities.cfm

The sites are mostly pull throughs, widely spaced with water and electric. There is a dumpstation and lots of trails and access to the water.

We posted a picture of our site in this thread....

Best luxury campground we ever stayed in is Holiday Cove in Cortez, just a hop and a skip from Bradenton and Sarasota. Clean clean clean! It is just 3/4 mile from the Anna Maria Island Beaches where, of course, one can walk or hike. Just had to put in a plug for this friendly, nice RV Resort which was our home for 2 months until we bought a condo. Dog lovers might want to know that if you go to Anna Maria Island via the Manatee bridge (instead of the Cortez bridge) there are doggy beaches along that route. Queen

Default Campgrounds in FLorida/NC/TN

I've already compiled a folder 'Recommended Campgrounds in Florida", thanks to all your wonderful suggestions. We are headed to the mountains of NC - near the Tennessee border - in mid April. Any suggestions on campgrounds that would aid me in compiling another folder. Thanks, again, for everyones wonderful input.
