Your points are well taken. Maybe just access doors to the under sofa storage. Would equal a lot more capacity than drawers and a little less weight.
Drawers would give a lot easier access though. It wouldn't be hard to do with some simple drawer slides. Just frame in the drawer opening and screw the front of the slide into that framework. Them make some simple, light weight, plywood hangers to support the rear of the drawer slides. Build drawer and install. Of course, you'd have to have a latch on the drawer to keep it from opening while towing.
