Thumbs up

TM could offer this as a factory option. It's a no-brainer.

Props to your ingenuity.

I just wanted to really thank you. I've always been disappointed with the sleeping positions in this particular TM, and I've noodled a lot of solutions, but have not moved forward on any. This is great, because it requires no permanent mods.

My 12 year old has already claimed "top bunk" so, I didn't need to sell it at all.

Unfortunately, I had to order the full bunk, because the single cabellas cot is out of stock. No biggie - the complete bunk will be fun for tent camping.

I will be using the full extension in back and hacking a small extension in front to make it even (as opposed to trimming the back leg like you did (making it a few inches taller). In this way, I should clear just enough headroom to make the couch usable at the same time as the bunk. This solves problem #2. How does everyone comfortably watch a movie together? Now Son #2 can be on the bunk. Son #1 and wife on the couch, and Dad in the easy chair. All looking towards the sink counter.

Thanks again... I'll post pictures when I finish.

+1 for the mod, ThePair.

I just made this modification (really, an addition) for a camping trip last weekend. My two young granddaughters shared the bunk and my daughter was in the bed below (son-in-law was stuck home with the littlest one).

It worked splendidly.

I have ordered an extra pair of the straight (non-swagged) tubes (the center ones) since I shortened the originals by 7 inches. I can then use the two beds together as a bunk again.

BTW, I didn't bother shortening the matt. It worked just fine bunching it up a little on the ends.

I bit pricey but otherwise fantastic.

Here's the detail on my bunk install. I intentionally made it tall enough to sit under (though a recline or slouch is required if someone is in the bunk).

Reinforcement: It turns out the the couch arms aren't held up by much, so I reinforced with a 2x4 shimmed in nice and tight.

I also added a jam bar made out of conduit. It hold the rear legs tight against the wall. I also left the middle bar just a smidge longer than required to ensure the bunk wedges in tightly.

I made all the white plastic pieces using amazing ShapeLock plastic (which becomes moldable when placed in near-boiling water.

I took your idea of the jam bar and just purchased a long enough extension/pressure-hold bar that is adjustable and can span the distance. I use it for other purposes as well, so it suits me for the job at hand -- definitely improved the stability.
