Default Dirty toilet indicator lens

My Thetford Electra Magic toilet's indicator lens (the dial that shows how full the toilet is) is so full of dust on the inside that we can no longer read it's level. Is it possible to clean inside that part, or do we need to replace it? where can I find instructions on how to clean it if those are available?

The entire indicator assembly is a rubber friction-fit thing that pops out the top of the toilet. You may need a putty knife or something similar to start it. Once out, you may be able to get into the indicator head. If no other answers show up, I'll check next time I am in there.

I've tried by drilling the back of the indicator and washing it out. I only succeeded in dissolving the paper indicator. I couldn't find any way to open it up. The front lens was securely glued and bonded.
