Santa Fe Trip
Last year the DW and I made a road trip down old route 66 and ended up in Santa Fe. We were only able to stay 2 nights due to time restraints, but what we saw we loved. We are going to take another trip there this May with our new (to us) TM. Last year we stayed at the KOA. This year I think we will stay at another campground on the same stretch of hwy. My daughter and her husband will be with us this year and we hope it will be a very memorable vacation. I was just wondering if anyone here had any experiences they would like to share about that area, as well as any recomendations for sight seeing and such. A couple of the restaurants we hit last year were Harry's Roadhouse and the Coyote Cafe. We also hit Frankie's Cassanova in Pecos. Any more suggestions?

Santa Fe and Taos NM are two of our favorite places in the SW USA. The old SW architecture, the Santa Fe Museum complex, the native art and retail art dealers ... and the New Mexican food.
In the past, with our tent, we've stayed up in mountains, the Pecos Wilderness Area campgrounds, and just stopped in town for the day. There are other great NFS campgrounds near Taos. Not sure what we'll do with our Elkmont ... probably try boondocking at the same places up in the hills as it is so beautiful, and cool compared to cities.

Hyde State Park, near Santa Fe, is spectacular. It's up in the mountains (a ski place in the winter) and is HIGHLY recommended. http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/PRD/Hyde.htm

Check out the Tecolote' Cafe for breakfast if you get a chance. It's fun just exploring around Santa Fe, I enjoy the plaza of course, with the street vendors and just relaxing in the shade. Oh yeah....try a frito pie from the Five and Dime store. Great fun!

We stayed at Santa Fe Skies this past fall - really nice CG, especially for pets - they have a dog walk that goes all the way around the CG. It's fairly close to downtown (maybe a 10 minute drive).
We ate at a few places in Santa Fe (can't remember the names of the places - sorry!) but every place we ate was GOOD! I don't think there's any such thing as bad New Mexican food...
Regards,
Bob

I thought about Hyde Memorial, but with no showers it might get a little rough with four adults and the itty bitty TM shower. If it was just me and the DW I might consider it.
W I was considering this CG: http://www.rancheros.com/main.html
It is right down the road from the KOA. Anyone ever tried it? It seems like it might be a little nicer than the KOA. I like that area because it is pretty but still close to the city.

My wife is a foody and is always consulting her book "Roadfood" by the Stern's. We didn't have enough Lipitor with us the last trip through, but you may enjoy Burts Burger Bowl.

Also - if you have seen the movie "Wild Hogs" then a trip down the turquoise trail to Madrid may be in order. The Mine Shaft Tavern is an interesting place for a burger and beer.

good food in SF
They're are a number of excellent restaurants in old town Santa Fe, great atmosphere, museums and art galleries as well. I like the Coyote Cafe but also enjoy the Shed, Il piatto (italian), El ferrol (spanish tapas), Cafe Pasqual's and inn of the Anasazi are a few others.
Plenty to see for sightseeing- hight road to Taos is well worth the trip, tent rocks -( http://www.blm.gov/nm/st/en/prog/rec...ent_rocks.html) is quite nice as well.
I've been down there a few times, it's one of my favorite places to visit in NM.

I second.......
....Tecolote Cafe!!!!!!
http://www.bing.com/local/details.as...fe%2c+Santa+Fe
I have sent many folks there since discovering Tecolote many years ago. It IS a hole-in-the-wall, but a very good one indeed. Last year, after leaving Tucson, we deviated from our course to Wisconsin just to have breakfast at Tecolote (Owl) Cafe. Worth it.
