Default Used models. How old is acceptable?

We have decided to upgrade from our Rockwood A frame popup and get a TrailManor. We could get a new one. But we had a lot of luck with buying our lightly used five year old at the time Rockwood.

So my question; is there such thing as a "too old to buy" TrailManor? I've been finding used ones that are even pre-2000. Does that matter? I'm getting the impression that they are built pretty well and if things are working then age doesn't matter. Is that correct? Any "I bought old and I'm happy" stories out there?

You are right. A well-maintained TM seems to last forever.

For the most part, changes and upgrades to the TM happened gradually, so there is no cutoff year for a "don't buy" decision. Beyond that, many changes were phased in over a period of more than a year, and were not dropped into place at the beginning of a model year, as is done with automobiles.

Off hand, I can think of only two important milestone changes. One was the change from rectangular wheel-wells to rounded ones. This happened in the late 1990's I think. The other was the change from wood framing in the shell walls to aluminum framing. This happened somewhere around 2002. These were important, and should be considered at purchase time. They are not necessarily apparent from a casual walk-around.

A change that was less critical and more apparent is that the position of the air conditioner changed a couple times, ending up on the rear edge of the front shell.

What others do members remember?

I think you covered it, Bill! Pretty much, any 2002 or newer TM in nice shape should last a long time. The other key I tell people is if it was stored inside throughout its life, it’s worth more. And it will be obvious which ones are stored inside vs out.

If you value having AC, the TM factory did away with the side mounted AC unit after about 2002 or 2003 and began installing roof AC. From what I hear, the roof AC works much better. The first generation roof AC was mounted on the rear shell and had to be plugged in. the 2nd generation roof AC was mounted on the front shell and was permanently wired in.
