A Class III hitch is more than capable of handling that tongue weight, as long as you use a Weight Distribution Hitch. For instance mine is labeled for only 550 pounds direct couple and 1500 with a WDH. Look at the label or stamped information on the hitch, it will tell you both tongue weights and gross pulling weigts, you just have to get under the hitch to read them.
