Default Cap nuts on bed supports

The two bed supports run in a track attached to the bed. There is a cap nut on the bolt running up into the track.
The cap nuts on my unit are almost all the way off with over a 1/4 inch of thread showing above the cap nut.
Should these cap nuts be tightened? If so the only way I can figure to do so is use needle nose pliers to hold the bolt while I tighten the cap nut.
How tight should the cap nut be and is there a better way to do it.

Do not tighten the cap nuts. They are self locking nuts and are installed with the exposed threads to allow you to lift the bed for a fire exit. The weight of the bed is resting on top of the bed support and the nuts are only there to prevent loss of the bolt, spacers and washers.
