Default 12 volt lighter socket too tight

I have a 2005 3124KB and I broke my fan plug because the Wingard socket is so tight. The problem with the socket is the plastic will not let the metal ring expand to fit the plugs. I drilled out the old lighter socket and installed a new one from the auto supply. Here is how I changed it. Remove the plate and cut the old socket connections from the circuit board. Remove the metal ring and contact inside the socket hole. Use a Unibit (or file it out) to cut the plastic hole out to 1" for the new lighter socket ( The new socket will be flush in the plate). The plug socket you get at the auto store screws together with a sleeve which works as a nut to hole it on the plate. Attach two wires on the lighter socket and tie in to the same wires the circuit board is tied into ( Black to the center post and white to the sleeve).
