Default rear receiver as a skid plate

I am happy to report the the TM factory installed rear hitch receiver makes an adequate skid plate.

Our last campsite required that I cross a dry creek bed to get to it.

When the hitch started to drag, and I could hear it, I got out to look. I could see that the plumbing was fine, but I did not want to bury the hitch. So I stacked up Lego blocks 3 high. A bag of 10 for each side. When I ran out of distance I moved the pile forward once.

Leaving was easy. The slope was not the same on each side.

When the truck tires started to spin in the talcum powder dirt I engaged 4wd and continued on my merry way.

I have not seen it yet, but my nephew shot some video of me leaving. If there is any interest I'll post it somewhere.

Like I keep saying, my brother with his 32 foot fifth wheel can not go where I can go and I do not like to go where he can go.

I do not advise dragging the TM on the ground. But in a pinch at least I know that if the surface between the tire and the rear hitch is in a plane that the plumbing will not get damaged.

I remember that thread.

The point I am trying to make is if you are tempted to take a TM off road, I think the rear hitch receiver adds value in terms of protecting the underside of the TM, at least some of the time.

Find a thread called "Lars' Excellent Adventure", probably in the Boondocking or the Frame forum. I think that's the one you are talking about.

My minor adventure was not side to side.

I was towing with the 2500HD long bed. As the truck came up out of the creek bed and then onto flat ground this lifted the TM tongue off the ground so high that the rear hitch receiver was dragging on the ground in the bottom of a flat creek bed. The TM tongue was perhaps a little more than 3 feet off the round.

Had I not stopped to put Lego blocks under the TM tires then the TM tires would have been off the ground and the TM would have been supported by the tow ball and the TM rear hitch receiver.

It was a pretty good wheelie for a trailer.

The main two items to watch out for back there is the storage box and the aluminum skin on the bumper. I bet the hitch does a great job protecting. Maybe a little loss of clearance.
