Default Thetford Recirculating Leaking

Hello. We are about to take a trip so we would really like to know what we need to do first. After our last trip, we noticed the floor around our recirculating toilet was getting *very* wet whenever the toilet would get moved around. So we were super careful for the rest of the trip and didn't really have any problems after that. This will be our first time taking the TM out since that. Should we maybe check something or replace something before we use it for a week? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Sounds like you have a bad floor seal/wax ring (note this is not the same wax ring you’d use on a toilet at home). If it happens when the slide valve at the bottom is closed, then you probably need new seals for the slide valve as well. Last, the toilet shouldn’t move. Are both the white clips in place? Is the flange secure to the floor? Pretty much all of this will require pulling the toilet. Also note that parts are getting scarce as Thetford has discontinued this toilet.

Shane has nailed it. The toilet should absolutely not move. If it does, it has come loose from the floor somehow, and will continue to leak on the floor until the condition is fixed.

In the Trailmanor Technical Library (part of this forum), there are several articles covering the toilet. I have linked to two of them below. The first one is a bit basic , but will assure you that you have a fundamental understanding of the toilet and how to use it. The second will give you detailed instructions on how to remove and re-seat it.

Good luck.

A dealer may tell you that because Thetford no longer makes or supports the toilet, the problem cannot be fixed. He will then suggest you spend $1000 having him install a new toilet of a different kind.

If you are handy, and motivated, you can remove and reinstall the Thetford yourself, using the instructions in the previous post. When you do so, be sure you don't misplace any parts. The wax ring (actually more pf a foam donut) that Shane mentioned is standard among RV toilets, and so is easily available and costs only a few bucks. The white clips (wedges) that he mentioned will be difficult to replace, so don't lose track of them when you pull them. The seals for the slide valve will also be tough to find, though you may be able to disassemble the valve, reset the seals if they have gotten wrinkled, and re-assemble. Be sure you post here on the Forum about what you need. A number of members have replaced their toilets and kept the old one as a source of parts.

If you decide to replace the toilet, there are a number of threads here on the Forum that will help. Some of them cover installation of a cassette toilet. Others describe installation of a Sealand M-28 toilet. A Search will uncover them.

There is one other possible though unlikely cause of a leak. Over the years, we have had a few instances where the plastic body of the toilet has cracked. This has usually happened where the seat rests when it is down, but I suppose it could happen anywhere. A quick examination should let you eliminate this thought.

I have a complete toilet with new slide seals, tank-to-seat gasket, and floor gasket for sale if anyone is interested. It looks brand new inside.

Otherwise, Amazon seems to have your parts. And most are even on sale!

Like Bill said, the clips are all but impossible to find. But they are Thetford part number 36966 or 08637. I may or may not have an extra one. I’ll have to dig through the pile and see… I really need to inventory my stock!
