Ford, with their better idea, is developing a triangular shaped tire. Not only does it have the same capability as the GM tire, but it also has 25 percent fewer bounces per revolution.

Sorry for being off topic, I just could not resist.

One could make a non-circular wheel, but there seems to be no advantage:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curve_of_constant_width

There was a good Poul Anderson science fiction story about this, which is where I first heard of them.

Bill -

I'm disappointed in the Wikipedia article! It missed two real applications of the "curve of constant width".

The first, I believe, is the rotor in Wankel engine, such as used by Mazda a few years ago.

The second is a drill bit that will drill a square hole. This is weird to watch, but it works.

If you come up with the name of the Poul Anderson book, I would like to read it. My favorite PA so far is Tau Zero.

Mike is correct, the story was The Three-Cornered Wheel. It's available in a couple of collections: http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?55407

Mike, just wondering, how are things at Carter's these days. I knew some of the staff had left and didn't know how much Trailmanor savvy they still had. Ready to un-retire yet?

I did not recognize any one the last time there. I quit going there for service last year. I have had to go to Clay's RV to get common RV parts that are no longer in stock at Carter's.

I guess Carter's finally gave up the ghost. I tried to call awhile ago and their phone was disconnected.

I'll drive by Carter's this week and take a look. I miss visiting with Johnny.
