Default Adding a radio in a 2005 2619 - speaker wire issue?

I finally got around to adding a Clarion head unit to my new (to me) 2005 2619. I followed some of the old threads and previously installed the same radio in my older 2720. I'm only getting the left speaker, the right one won't work. Here is what i've done in terms of troubleshooting:
  • started with both sets of speaker wires hooked up, no sound in either speaker (stumped)
  • unhooked the right speaker, had sound in the left speaker (rules out the radio)
  • switched the left speaker lead to the right speaker wire, no sound (rules out the right radio wire)
  • switched the left speaker lead back to the left speaker wire and got sound in left speaker
  • Repeated all of the steps with a new speaker hooked in at the bulkhead (rules out the speaker)

What I'm thinking is the right speaker wire is cut/grounded out somewhere. When I hook it up, it cuts out both speakers. I've swapped wires with both speakers and cannot get the right side working.

Can anyone think of any additional troubleshooting steps besides splicing the right radio wire in various places w/ a jumper to see where it might be shorted? Does a short make sense? It's been ages since i did any troubleshooting on car audio. My biggest clue is that once i hook up the left speaker, I lose sound to all speakers. So it's definitely doing something to the radio.

There was previously no radio in the camper. I pulled the panel and the wire bundle was still intact. I felt back to the bundle and didn't nick the wire when I unbundled either. I'm afraid it got nipped with a staple somewhere and the only definitive way of fixing it is to tear the ceiling crown moldings off and fishing another cable direct to the head unit. I hated doing this on my old 2720..esp on a much better condition & newer camper.

thoughts? I'm stumped.

Quick way to confirm what seems to be a damaged wire to the speaker.
With nothing connected use an ohm meter and test the wires by connecting the meter to each end of the wires. Usually the wires will either have a copper and a silver wire, or a white line on one side. Connect the similar ends to the meter leads and see if they show continuity. If not there is an open, though with the no sound when all wires are connected makes me think in terms of a short to ground. You can also connect to one end of the wire and the other meter lead to ground, if it shows continuity then you have a short.

No ohm meter-- use a length of wire to connect the speaker that is the problem, not using the suspect wire at all. I bet it will work fine. If not you may have the wiring wrong to the radio itself.

The wires go from the radio into the back of the fridge area, then up into the roof line and are under the molding along the ceiling and wall. IT IS A BEAST TO PUT BACK ON!!!
I am a lot better doing the tests than telling how to do it. Hope my babble makes some sense.

Default me too

I am running into a similar problem with my 2005 2720. Radio seemed to work fine on previous camping trips but I closed the street side window (next to the sink and above the fridge) a bit too hard and the reception went out. Tried another antennae into the back of the radio and got better reception but only the right speaker works now.

More importantly I have the blade antennae and the red light is on but the reception is awful. How do I troubleshoot this. Does anyone know how the wire from the antennae to radio is routed?

Appleton,

I can offer two suggestions: check the area where each speaker wire comes into the cabinet - especially close to any bends in the wire. I had a staple going through and shorting out the wire leading to the left speaker. Once I removed the staple the speaker worked fine. The other place to look is in the bundle of wires in the lower refrigerator compartment. Remove the lower outside grill to access that area. In the bundle are the connectors for all 4 speaker wires. With the radio on and a nearby window open so you can hear the radio, gently move each speaker wire connector. A poor connection here will prevent a speaker from working.

Here is a link to the amplified radio antenna cable routing photos I took when replacing my antenna:

TM uses crimped telephone type connectors which tend to pull apart way to easy. Most new electronics have protection circuits on the speaker outputs. If there is a short, it will shut down the outputs.
