My brother has a similar problem. He has dad's 53 Willys CJ3B Jeep (high hood). At least he has a temperature gauge, but no smog equipment.
Neither of these are what anyone would call a modern vehicle.
I normally try to keep my cars and trucks for 20 years. So for me, at this time the border between a modern car and an old car is 1990.

The '53 Willys wouldn't be built with the precision and material that would require the higher running temps. The Miata is a different story.
Most vehicles starting in the late 70's - early 80's were designed to run @ > 195*. Early on, there were high temp related issues, especially with head gaskets etc. Over time, 225* is well tolerated without issue and 280* is seldom a problem, although, I would not want to test that on my car.
