Default frame is different behind each tire

Hi TMOs:
We are new owners of a 2006 2720SL with 14" tires. I have attached some pictures. The frame behind the wheel on the driver side is right up against the tire. It is bent back like someone was trying to give it more room and has sharp edges. The tire is ruined in one spot like it was hitting the frame. The other on the passenger side has plenty of room between the back of the tire and the frame. Any ideas why this is so? Also, we would appreciate ideas on how to fix? We would eventually like to lift it and get 15".

Not sure what part of the tire we are looking at but the only place I have anything close is at the top. (street side shown with 205x75x15 & no lift). What is your section width ?

Interesting, I wonder if you measured from a fixed point like where the tongue "A" frame meets the side rails to the front axle bolt, if it's the same on both sides? I meet a camper once that keep having tire issues and finaly found that the axles were not mounted squarely at the factory. He had to move one side forward an inch or so.

The pictures I posted are looking straight up from below as if you were taking the pictures on your back. I am attaching new pictures from the side as you posted (Padgett). Please double click the photos to see more detail. On the passenger side there is a piece of frame that comes down behind the tire and bends in an 'L' shape. That piece is 5 " away from the rear of the tire and the "L" points toward the back of the trailer, away from the tire. On the drivers side the 'L' part of the frame points in towards the rear of the tire and it is only about 1/2" away from the tire, it is all bent and sharp. The tire was destroyed on the inside. I'm sure it was hitting that L shape jagged edge. We are lucky we made it home safely. I am just confused that all frames aren't the same on certain models (2006 2720SL) and that they aren't even the same on each side? Or how to fix, other than to grind it down. We aren't real handy.

I had the same issue. I ended up cutting off some the mental that protrudes out toward the tire on the driver's side. Then, I added some support to replace the metal cut away when I added protection for the plumbing on that side. There was no way to run 15" tires. Like you, it looked like the 14" tires had bent the metal some when the trailer bounced while traveling.

I had the same thoughts as you thinking that it was odd that the wheel well was not the same on both sides.

What size tires do you have ? Mine came with 215x75x14 LRCs and I went to 205x75x15 LRDs which are about a half inch taller and there are no side clearance issues. I can see where a 225 or 235x75x14 might have issues.

According to the parts book, all TMs (except maybe the 3326) use the same plastic wheel well liner (black). TM p/n 27041 and the one I bought last year looks just the same as the one that came on my '06.

Kizzys, I don't understand why your clearance is so small, as seen in the 2nd set of pictures you posted. Here are my before and after pictures when I installed the lift kit, and even in my "before" (on the right), I have way more clearance than you are showing. I wonder if there is something wrong with your axle and it is not lifting the trailer enough.

(Note to anyone interested: both of these pictures are with the original 14" wheels).

I am running 15" load range E now.

I attached a before and after picture. In the first picture, look by the tire and you can see metal close to the tire. The second picture shows the same area after the metal was cut away to provide clearance for the tire.

The final picture shows a tire that was damaged by rubbing on the metal before I cut it off.

OK, you have 225x75x15s like I thought, the stock tire on mine was a 26.7" diameter 215x75x14. I went to a 27.1" 205x75x15 LRD to minimise clearance issues. Yours are 28.3" and that is part of the problem.

Am a little curious why a LRE 2830 lb rated tire ? Seems nice but overkill.

BTW if you go to a shop that does tire trueing they should be able to clean up that tire.
