The best product we've found to remove tree sap, gum from carpets, adhesive residue from self-stick labels put on products, etc., is Goo Gone. It is made by Magic American Corp., Cleveland, OH. You can buy it in a variety of stores, hardware, grocery, Wal-Mart, etc. It is great stuff and relatively inexpensive, about $3.50 for an 8 oz bottle that will last for months or years. It is a citrus-base product. I even use it to clean the tracks on my HO train layout with excellent results. :

A similar product is called OOPS! and it works well on lots of surfaces. I've used it on vinyl flooring, hardwood flooring, clothing and carpet to get up everything from black heel marks, "permanent" black marker and chewing gum.

It also works to clean up paint spatters.
