Are your tanks mounted horizontal or vertical? And from my understanding, the change over occurred 10 years ago and updated the valve. What year tanks do you have, are they original to the TM. Can you offer a picture of the bracket?

Any store bought propane tanks should fit the TM and be filled at RV stations, dealers, propane store, or exchange them at a kiosk.

If they are vertical swap them out at an exchange. We just did it and got 2 2017 tanks.

Propane tanks in the SL and SD models are horizontal tanks, and distinctly different from the vertical tanks used on other TM models. They are NOT interchangeable.

If your propane supplier won't fill your tank because it's too old, you may just need to get the tank recertified. Large suppliers like Amerigas will do this for a nominal fee ($10-$20) -- they sometimes remove the valve, do a hydrostatic test, take a peak inside, and then stamp a new date on the tank, which will allow fillers to legally fill the tank. Sometimes, they just stamp the new date.

If you need new tanks, be prepared to spend ~$150-$200 each. I believe I've posted here where I bought mine, as I cannot remember where.

There's a guy right here on this forum in the Parts & Accessories section that is parting out a TM and I think he has (or had) a pair of horizontal tanks.

No need to purchase new ones. Take the tanks to a propane supplier and have them recertified . Get them filled while you are there.

Has anyone ever replaced their tanks, the upright ones, with the new fiberglass tanks that are now available? These style tanks would greatly reduce tong weight as they are much lighter than the steel tanks. Just wonder what the results where when used.

I had considered this briefly when those tanks first came out, and even looked a bit for ones that were horizontal. However, my concern was that they would not be nearly as puncture and abrasion resistant as compared to the steel, which could be an issue as rocks and other road debris as blasted upon them from the wheels of the TV.

Further, I'm not sure the effect on tongue weight is that significant. If I recall correctly, the tare weight on a steel tank is on the order of ~18 pounds, and a fiberglass tank is roughly half that. So total weight savings off the tongue is about 18 pounds. That's great, but it's unlikely to make any difference in handling while towing. If that were part of a larger effort to do a bunch of things to reduce tongue weight, then that could definitely be part of an overall effort to do that. But not by itself.

It would be nice to be able to see the propane level in the fiberglass tank, though.

Thanks for the quick reply Dave. That was the only thing that I wondered about, the puncture proof of the tank, although I think that safety wise they would not be able to sell them if they punctured easily. Maybe they would not take a lot of weight of the tongue but you sure notice the weight difference when carrying them to get them filled.

Exactly! Having just lugged the battery up from my cellar, and down the driveway to my TM, I was grumbing the whole way that I have to also carry TWO propane tanks from the barn down to the TM - NOT a short distance!
