Default Can the swing tongue be removed? Can it then also be used?

I just bought a 3124 that has a swing tongue, but haven't seen it yet. My understanding is that the tongue attaches to the trailer with a pin on each side, and so it can be easily removed. Is that correct?

And if so, or even if it is not removed but just swung to the side, the tongue jack doesn't support the weight of the tongue, correct? My thinking is that weight is supported entirely on the stabilizer jacks.

I'm going to have this TM setup in one spot for an extended period, including some times when it will not be attended (out in the boonies), and so I'm wondering if the tongue can be removed, and left removed, to deter theft. And if so, can the trailer be inhabited with the tongue removed? I can't see any obvious reason why not.

Dave -

Can the pins be removed? Over the years, TM has swung both ways on that. On most TMs, only one of the pins is easily removable. The other one seems to be swaged in tight. I'm betting that you could beat it out with a hammer, then slightly enlarge the hole, and make it easily removable thereafter.

Whenever the tongue is swung aside, it is important not to put any weight on the tongue jack. Years ago, one of our members put weight on the jack, and bent something important.

Once all four stabilizers are down, it is perfectly safe to enter and live in the trailer. Remember, each jack by itself is rated to lift more than the entire weight of the trailer.

I swung my tongue back, and the street pin wasn't too hard to remove. I did have resistance on the hinge/curb side. Its heavy and awkward. Make sure you disconnect any wires or cables. I would suggest having help. Almost got mine off and the the wires and weight stopped me and I put it all back in place. My back wasn't worth completing the task.

I used to take mine off on my 2005 2720SL every time that I parked it. Both pins came out without a struggle (probably because of regular use).

I just put the stabilizers down both sides of the frame and lowered the trailer down on them. If you don't trust the stabilizers, use jack stands. I often did that.
