It could certainly turn into a kayak conversation. We definitely aren’t looking for whitewater kayaks. Calm, maybe a little bit of chop, but something to fish off of.

Oh trust me I’m familiar with those old Rangers. I made a lot of money fixing them when I worked at a Ford dealer...

Hi all, I know these are expensive , but they have solutions for hard and soft covers, https://www.max-modular.com/shop-max-modular. i have also thought of using the receiver an the rear of the trailer and fabricating a mount for the tongue with an elevated rack. This would be removable for setting up the trailer of course.

I would still like to find a no-drill rack that would work with a tri-fold cover. The Max-Modular site is new since I searched a few years ago, so I paged through the racks on their site. I was unable to identify one that would help.

Some of the descriptions are confusing me. For example, the best bet looks like the two-piece MAX Modular UTILITY RACK for TONNEAU COVERS (URTC) , Fits All Toyota, Ford, Chevy, RAM, and Nissan Trucks. It appears to have vertical uprights, not bent inward, which is a good sign. And the text description says
- Can be mounted over a Softopper.
- Allows most tonneau covers to fully open.

But in the Fitment Guide FAQ I see
"- Folding covers will not be able to open."

And the photos show a tri-fold, but the rear panel is only partially open, apparently blocked from above. The issue appear to be that the height (about 21" to the underside of the crossbar) is not enough to accommodate the three folding panels for a truck bed any longer than about 5 feet. There is an accessory called a HighLift Jack, but it doesn't help the tri-fold problem.

This is the same kind of problem that I found as I explored all the other rack sites a few years ago, so you understand my skepticism. Am I missing something?

Hi Bill, you should email or call and tell them make and model of cover you have. I have a Diamondback cover on my F150 and they said the URTC rack would allow it to open as the crossbar height is 24 inches at the highest setting.

That's a good idea, and I will do that. But the problem is going to be that, as the ad says, the top of the crossbar is at 24 inches. But the cross bar is a 2"X3" tube (plus a bit of trim) which means that the bottom of the crossbar is at 21 inches or a bit lower. The rear panel on my tri-fold is 22-1/2 inches wide, so it won't fit under the crossbar. That's a shame - it looked good for a moment.

I may have found a solution... This setup in particular fits my crew cab/short box Ram but I would guess they have similar setups for other makes and models. The chat folks are very helpful.

I don't mind having to take kayaks off before opening my TM. Has anyone carried Kayaks on the roof if your TM?

There have been several other discussions, which you can find with the Search tool. I don't recall whether anyone was successful. At very least, you would have to bring the weight of the kayaks down on the top of the walls. I don't think the flat part of the roof is strong enough to take the weight. So this would mean attaching crossbars to the top of the walls, rather than trying to lay the 'yaks down flat on the roofs.
