Default Tongue weight vs. dry weight.

I was just rummaging around the Trail Manor web site, and found something odd.

For a 2720, the dry weight is listed around 3130 pounds. The hitch weight is 380 pounds.
For a 2922, the dry weight is listed around 3350 pounds. The hitch weight is 260 pounds.

We are all familiar with the industry standard that the tongue weight of a trailer - any trailer - must be at least 10% of the trailer weight. The 2720, at 12%, meets this requirement nicely. The 2922, at 8%, isn’t even close.

Before I go to TM's web site and ask, does anyone have any insight into this issue?

The 2922 has a king bed in the rear and the 2720 has a queen bed. 78" wide vs 60" wide". That accounts for 18" of the 24" difference between 2720 and 2922. Which puts at least 18"of the 24" behind the fulcrum point of the axle. Being behind the fulcrum would make the tongue lighter? Not sure where the other 6" are. The storage in the 2922 is at least 2x as deep as a 2720, which could even make things worse if you pack the rear storage heavy. I know my DW would use all that space.

The 2922 at 8%?? If it's correct, I wonder if that had anything to do with posts I have seen from time-to-time about sway issues. It's the only TM models I have ever read post about sway issues. If I had a issue, I think I would consider hauling with a full fresh tank which is ahead of the axle.

Our 3023 compared to our old 2720. Same queen bed and rear storage depth. On the bottom shell I can not see a difference from axle back compared to a 2720. The increase of 3' seems as if it's all ahead of the axle, which I believe should give us a greater tongue percentage than a 2720.

I think tentcamper hit the nail on the head... I also recall a few complaints of sway with 2922 models.

If the numbers on the TM website are correct, then 8% almost guarantees a sway issue. Owners should pack as much stuff as they can up forward - as far forward as possible. And get some serious sway-control equipment - something like a trunnion bar setup, or one of the all-in-one sway control hitches. Some are expensive, but I would spring for it.

But it would be hard to pack in the front with such a large storage area under the bed. It's a leat 2x as deep as the 2720. Maybe put all the bedding and pillows there. But, the outside storage I know I would fill with tools, grill, and other heavy stuff.

Im thinking if it was my trailer, I would travel with 20 or 40 gallons of water which is ahead of the axle.

Interesting find, Tim. First, the table of specifications in this older reference calls out the 2720, but the numbers in the table are clearly for a 2922. So that is a typo. Then, the weight figure in this older reference show the tongue weight to be out of line only for the non-slide model - the rest are quite reasonable.

. . . . . . . . . . . . KB (Bed) KS (Sofa) KD (Dinette)
Dry Weight (lbs) 2880 2975 2975
Tongue Weight (lbs) 238 434 434

But today's reference shows all three weights of the 2922 to be out of line
Dry Weight (lbs) 3346 3386 3386
Tongue Weight (lbs) 260 280 280

I've got to believe that this is just sloppy editing. After all, TM has always known about the hitch weight requirement, and has always made sure that their trailers meet the requirement with a comfortable margin. So I guess I'm going to let the issue drop. Owners of the 2922, you can breathe again.
