Default 2017 Ecoboost Expedition

Hello All,
This season we'll be towing our TM with a Ford Expedition instead of my Toyota Tacoma. The Expedition has a smaller engine ( 3.5l as opposed to 3.9l )than the Tacoma and a lower towing limit ( 6300# as opposed to 6500# ) than the Tacoma. The turbocharged engine is pretty amazing. The Expedition pulls the TM much more easily. It has a built in brake controller with configurable settings for multiple trailers. It has a Tow/Haul button than changes shift points AND downshifts when braking foe engine drag.
Since it has an automatic transmission I'll be interested to see how the trans fluid temperature is affected when towing in the mountains. The electronic display gives access to trans temperature. On a shakedown trip right now and will see if we need any fine tuning to make this a great tow vehicle.

Paul

I towed the last half of last summer with my Expedition (retired my Bronco from towing duties) and it was a dream to tow with. I will have a hard time switching to anything else if I ever have to....

Paul, what trim Expedition do you have? You mentioned yours has the integrated brake controller, which probably means you have the heavy duty tow package bumping your towing capacity up to around 9,600#. Wife and I were looking to upgrade her Flex to the Expedition.

The Expedition max trailer weight with the heavy duty tow package (which includes 7-wire harness, aux auto trans oil cooler, larger radiator, electric brake wiring kit, trailer brake controller, trailer sway control, hitch receiver) is 9,200lbs, without is 6,600lbs - at least that's what the specs are for a 2016. It's also important to know the rear axle ratio. There is a two digit code, labeled AXLE, on the Safety Compliance Certification Label (located on the driver's door facing or latch post pillar), which will give you the rear axle ratio.

Edit to add - just looked up 2017 specs, and they are the same - 6000lbs and 9200lbs

The "Axle" code is 10. I don't know what that translates to in terms of ratio. The Expedition is an XLT with factory towing package. I suspected it had a higher rating than 6300# but the Ford dealer insisted that was correct. Still, has the towing package so it's plenty for the TM or for my girlfriends horse trailer. It's a nice ride.

The 10 equates to 3.15 ratio. And yup, the Expedition is a sweet ride. I'd always love my Bronco (1988, original owner), but the Expedition is smooth, and quiet. :-)
