Default Wheel well and skirt mod...

I'm working out the details to modify my wheel wells and covers. The wheel wells are the older 'box section' style. I'm considering installing metal fenders from eTrailer to prevent the blowout 'roll-up' of tread and destruction that goes with it. I do know about the mod on the forum using aluminum flashing, that is what initiated this train of thought..

Also going to modify the rectangular cover. Putting hinges along top edge and quarter or half turn Dzus captive fasteners at the lower corners. Then, if needed, twist 2 fasteners, flip up cover... easy tire access.

Thoughts? Be kind...

What do the metal fenders look like? Do you have a link? We had a blowout after we installed the retrofit and the main thing that saved the underneath from more damage was the spray foam that we installed above it.

As far as the hinges and fastenings go, are they going to rub against the inside of the top wall when you fold down?

The hinges shouldn't stick out farther than the pre-existing trim around the skirt, and the fasteners will be flush with the skirt. They are designed for aircraft access panels. Uses a screwdriver to turn 90 or 180 degrees, depending upon which ones I use.

That trailer fender is 9" wide. The TM liner is 12" wide. How do you plan to fill the other 3" ?

Still a work in progress. However, I'm basing my thought upon the dimensions contained in the wheel well conversion pdf that is here on the forum. I still need to do direct measurements of my rectangular wheel wells.

Could ask the highly skilled welders I work with to section the fender and add sheet stock to meet the need.
