Default Colorado Springs Area or West of Denver

Looking for recommendations on campgrounds in either the Colorado Springs area or west of Denver. Would like to stay somewhere we can get the full effects of the natural Colorado, but since we are not boondockers we want to have at least electric since we would be there for 3 nights.
Know about the fires this summer and don't know what campgrounds might be closed because of them. We stayed in the Rocky Mtn National Park last September and enjoyed it.

You might want to take a look at Westcliff/Silvercliff in the Wet valley. It is west of Pueblo. To get up there you go out by the Army Fort SW of the Springs on 115. If you want to you can go up the back route through Canon City on US50 and turn at Texas Creek. Otherwise you take 69 (?) through Florence.

It is very high up and there are not a lot of trees once you are there. You can see across the valley and the view of the Wet mountains is gorgeous. The town is just big enough to have the services you might need such as gas, a few restaurants, and an Ace Hardware. There are at least two small RV parks, and camping in the area. But you can get out of town in a couple of minutes. There are some places to see/go around there and LOTS of streams. If you fish there is a little lake there with fish in it.

If you go don't miss Bishop's Castle. Jim Bishop has been building himself a real castle for the last 50 years. It is rough but amazing. We saw a herd of elk on our way there once. Deer are plentiful in the area. Frequently seen.

They have an annual Bluegrass Festival one weekend, and then a rodeo on another. Don't know what else. Check the town website.

Mueller State Park was really nice a few years ago. I don't know if it was affected by the fires or not.

I have been to Bishop's Castle a couple of times when we camped in the Wet Mountains. It is well worth the visit. Check your political opinions at the door. This old blog post of mine has a picture I took of it at the end. http://southpointforty.blogspot.com/...al-forest.html

The TM National Campvention in 2006 was held in colorado springs at the Garden of the Gods campground. The views were nice and had alot of fun but that was due to the company we were keeping (about 97 other TM owners!).

Mueller did not suffer from the fires. But you better make your reservations months in advance. Beautiful area.

We just returned from the bluegrass festival in Westcliffe. Beautiful valley. There is a decent RV park in town. We liked the place and will return again next year.

You are quite correct about checking your politics at the door. Bishop is an eccentric fellow and I have observed him to start yelling when he gets going on the government. He refuses to get permits from the county and they have charged him with various violations. However, he always goes to trial on the charges and so far has been aquitted.

There's beautiful Lake San Isabel just a couple miles past Bishops Castle if you need a nice camping area. Right on the lake, but I don't think they have electric sites???
