Timken Bearing Replacement

I'm posting this since I've not seen it anywhere else. I'm refurbishing the 2004 2720SL I bought last December. Harveyrv was kind enough to advise me that if I were to replace the bearings to use Timken brand as they would not be cheap "made in China" bearings.

The 2004 2720SL Dexter axle section of my Owner's Manual states that bearing cones and cups should always be changed out in sets, i.e., don't just replace the bearing cones.

Timken sells 2 cup and cone sets for the 3500 Lb axle on my TM which I'm listing below along with the bearing cup and cone part #s

Timken® 1-1/16" Bearing Cup & Cone Set #4
Wheel Bearing cone #L44649: I.D.= 1.0625" W= 0.5600"
Wheel Bearing cup #L44610: O.D.= 1.9800"

Timken® 1-3/8" Bearing Cup & Cone Set #17
Wheel Bearing cone #L68149: I.D.= 1.3775" W= 0.6250"
Wheel Bearing cup #L68111: O.D.= 2.3612"

FYI I found that Amazon.com has the cheapest prices. Do your search using "Timken Set #4" then "Timken Set #17". Double check to make sure the Brand Name is Timken before ordering.

The last time I bought Timken bearings was for a boat trailer, about a year and half ago. The bearing was made in China and the race in Romania all nicely boxed together.

I bought a set of Timken bearings for my '98 TM about a year ago. They were stamped "Made in USA". I hope that hasn't changed.....

All the Timken cones and cups I bought are stamped USA as well.

Thanks for letting us know......... I was waiting to hear back from you before I placed my order. If Timken has sunken to getting their bearings from China, I sure wouldn't want any part of them.

At this stage in history, the Chinese seem to be having a real quality problem with their steel and particularly with their hardened steel.

Do I need one of each set (#4 and #17) for EACH wheel on my TM if I'm going to do a complete bearing job? (have my local auto mechanic do it, actually...) Or are these two different sizes depending on the specific TM/Dexter axle? If so do I order "2 sets" of one size, or does a set such as "#4" cover 2 wheels. Thanks for educating me, just haven't done this before. I have same year TM as yours but larger model 3124KB.

You need TWO (2) sets of each size, so that's 4 bearing/cone sets total. One set of each size goes on each wheel. You will also need 2 bearing seals and 2 D-rings -- one of each for each wheel. I just posted the part numbers in another thread within the past few days.
