Greasing the bearings......
............is a half hour job. A grease gun with zerk fitting, a cartridge with the appropriate grease, a flat bladed screwdriver, a bunch of paper towels and some Q-Tips is all you need. Remove the rubber cup seal (to allow old grease to flow out), mate the zerk fittings securely, and start pumping grease. Old grease oozes out around the axle (in a circle around the zerk fitting). When the old, black grease is replaced by a oozing flow of clean grease, yer done. Each wheel takes about 1/2 of the contents of a standard cartridge. Clean the wheels, reinstall the rubber cup seals and yer done.

Thanks for the info. Seems more doable. I still don't understand the 12,000 mile deal and why everybody seems to be greasing at two or three thousand miles?

Don't know about "everybody", but I greased in April each year. As in, once a year. One year I towed for 15k miles and probably should have greased earlier. Still, if periodic maintenance reminders are on yer calendar, it's (IMO) not going to be a problem.

Jack -
Good question. I may be losing my mind, but I SWEAR that the manual with my old (2002) TM said to grease every 2000 miles. I no longer have that manual, of course - it went away with my old TM - but sure enough, the new manual says 12,000 miles, just as you reported.

My '02 manual says......umm...don't know. It's buried in the mud and turf in the median of Hwy 74 near Bloomington, IL. But I think it said 12,000 miles.

Resurrection!
I am sorry to resurrect this thread, but I have a question for those that know, or have access to thier owners manual. I have decided to pull the hubs to inspect the brakes on my trailer, and I want to replace the grease seal on the hub when I do. I found a site that sells the seals (and there is a boat store not far from me), but I wonder what the part number is for the seals? I looked here http://dexteraxle.com/seals but I am not certain which seals are used as I am not sure what the axle number is (other than 10"). Does anyone know which seal is used on the TM?
TIA,
Larry

The Dexter Axle Operation Maintenance Service Manual that I have states that for brake size 10 x 2 1/4, the standard seal is 010-004-00, and the E-Z Lube seal is K71-303-00.

Thanks Tim!! That's what I needed, I wasn't sure if the brakes were 2-1/4 or 1-1/2.
