Gas Mileage
What gas mileage do you get pulling your TM versus not pulling?
We just left on our first trip with a 3124b. I have a 2005 Toyota Tundra DC w/4x4. I managed 11-11.5 mg on my first two tanks (all highway driving) and around 9 mpg on my 3rd tank. The 3rd tank was in a hellacious crosswind though in West Texas. I normally get 18mpg highway under 3K ft. For some reason I get 1-2 mpg higher at higher elevations.

I have a 2720SL and a 2005 Toyota Sequoia. I get ~19 MPG highway when not towing, and about 13-14 MPG while towing provided I don't go faster than 60 MPH. If I go 70 MPH, gas mileage drops to ~10 MPG.

With our turbodiesel Jeep the different is negligible - just under 21 mpg towing our 2720SL, and around 21-23 not towing.

I got 15.0 mpg on a round trip of 340 miles towing the TM this week between Ruckersville, VA. and Hanover PA.....a combination of highway and city driving. I got 15.3 mpg with the TM of mountainous interstate between Harrisonburg, VA. and the New York border last fall. Most of the time I get between 14 and 15 mpg with city/highway towing, unless there is a lot of mountain travel, which can dip it below 14 mpg.
I try to be a real conservative driver. I do maintain the speed limit, but might take a minute of so to get up to that on takeoff. I stay off the brake as much as possible with plenty of following distances. There are probably a lot of people behind me that don't like it, but they don't have to pay for my gas.

We just returned a few weeks ago from the desert southwest. 3124KS pulled with an '04 Expedition. We averaged 14-15 mpg while towing, and get 17-18 when not towing. Mostly all Interstate while towing at 65-70 mph. Just over 5000 miles round trip.

Bob

About a 3-4 mpg penalty when towing (usually in the 16 mpg range), provided there is no evil wind. I tow at as close to 60 mph as I can do. Good thing, as I drove about 25 miles on the freeway the other day towing with 4 wheel drive on. Max is 62 mph, which I only briefly exceeded. I had 4wd drive on to get out of a nasty parking area with the TM and forgot to turn it off. A mind is a terrible thing to waste...

Bruce,
We did a 6,000 mile trip out west last year. 3124KS pulled by a 2002 Tundra, 4x4. For the entire trip we averaged 13.6 mpg. Worst tank was 12 mpg in a strong headwind on US 2 in Montana. I drive with a light foot and prefer the two lane roads. Rarely over 60 mph and more usually around 55. When not towing I average ~ 17mpg in Tundra for local driving and 19mpg on extened highway trips.

Wow, You guys are getting better results than me. I need to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've been doing about 55-65 mph on Interstates and less on 2 lanes. Maybe I had a headwind on I10 going west and didn't reallze it.
I'm not sure I waned to be an anomaly but someone has to do it. I'll keep monitoring to increase the sample size!

Bruce -
I'll join you in the anomaly corner. I think our numbers are about 16/13, although that was in a hilly part of southern California.
A couple interesting sidenotes. We have one of those fancy mpg meters so we can watch it in real time. Simply turning the air conditioner on and off makes more than 1 mpg difference. But if it is hot out, I'll pay the price.
And, as expected, turning off overdrive makes a lot of difference since it increases engine RPM. But in hilly country I turn it off anyway. Gasoline, expensive as it is, is cheaper than transmissions.
