You do not need to open the shells just to jack up the trailer, but you generally must do so to change the tire as you most folks report that they cannot pull the tire off the studs unless you remove the wheel well skirts.

I would pop the latches. I do on mine. Jacking could cause abnormal stresses on those latches.

Not a lot of work and certainly can't hurt

Agreed. Although I have never had the opportunity to jack the TM without the intent of removing the wheels.

When I did the lift kit mod I tried to get the wheels off without opening the shells and I couldn't. I was able to open the shells slightly without removing the trailer from the garage and got them off.

Default Tire change on TM

I have had 3 blow outs since 2007 on a 2000 3124 KB. They have all been on street side/passenger side. I had a large scissor jack that took a lot muscle to crank up, which I replace with 1 1/2 to 2 ton bottle jack. It was not strong enough either and I used the stabilizers to help raise the TM. Hard job that time! The latest tire change I used a 5 ton bottle jack, 8 in. high. I put it under the frame near the tire and jack it up as high as possible. Then I put a jack stand under the frame, lowered the jack till the TM is on the stand, put the jack on blocks of wood and jacked TM the rest of the way off the ground. I have always raised both the front and back half of the TM, because I keep the tire and jack in the back storage area. I have also always removed the skirt because it seemed easier. I also push up those latches up at the corner to keep the two tops from going back and forth, when big trucks go blowing by at 75 mph. I am getting good at this, but do not want any more tire changes on I-25 in rush hour traffic.
FYI The TM has a 2 lift kit, 15 wheels and I tow with a 2002 GMC Envoy with a straight 6.
