So I'm on the Outer Banks miles from anyone/anything and decide to do one donut in the sand. Well, it was an expensive donut ($120). This ranger comes from (haven't a clue) and makes a major issue. The first thing he says (REAL nasty attitude), aren't you a little old to be doing this, and threatens to put me in jail. Needless to say I don't take well to threats, so I told him to do whatever he thought he needed to do but don't threaten me. Keep the lectures to himself and just give me the ticket so I could get out of NC ASAP. Talk about giving someone a badge and a gun! I couldn’t help but laugh in his face.

It has been my experience that almost all cops are nasty. I guess you have to have that type of personality to be a cop.

Skidaway Island State Park in Savannah is a treasure. We go there 2 or 3 times a year.

I'll check it out when I'm down there, thanks!

I love that about our parks. It keeps the party atmosphere down, I think, which is a big plus to us. I realize that's not for everyone. I remember a couple of years ago we were camping at our local state park (Falls Lake - Holly Point) on Labor Day weekend. I remember standing outside just listening at how quiet it was on a Saturday evening of a major holiday with the campground full. The rangers don't tolerate very much noise.

We have the same problem, there's one area here in CO where you can be camping and very quite, but the Ranger always wants to stop and check your ATV for the proper stickers and such. Even when it's parked as it should be in campgrounds. Which is fine, but the nasty attitude is always there, and not neccesary.

Wasn't Barney Fife from NC?

Someone edited my post. So much for free speech. "Nasty" was not the word I used.

A couple of comments from a SC homegrown.

The beaches of SC, especially around Myrtle Beach (both northward and southward of MB) are excellent as are the State Parks for RV’s. It’s a little bit of a ride from MB to just across the NC state line in a little town called Callabash, NC which has some of the best fried “popcorn shrimp”, oysters, and hushpuppies to be found anywhere.

A little further northward, about 2 hours from MB, is Wilmington, NC which is a historical port dating back to Revolutionary War days and has a great waterfront area for eating, etc. The beach there is not as good as is in MB.

Hilton Head doesn't have much beach that is publicly available and is also historical; it had a POW camp there for yankee soldiers. Today, however, it is beautifully green, overpriced and crowded (imo). DW and I routinely travel there to visit relatives but will most likely stay this year at Stoney Crest Plantation Campground in Bluffton, SC, which is close to HHead but on the land side of the bridge. I have not stayed at that campground before, but I hear good things (hoped to be true).
Link to Stoney Crest:

Also, from Bluffton, it is both an easy trip northward to Beaufort, SC (note: not Beaufort, NC) which is also historical and has a beautiful port to visit, and southward to Savannah, GA, which is a must see place to visit – great historic restorations and riverwalk. St Patricks day, more or less, is a great time to visit if you don’t mind the crowds (but be careful where you park, especially at night).

If I were planning to go to Charleston, SC, on a day trip, I would try to ask one of the TM Trailblazers about their recent (I think) rally at James Island (near Charleston). Further away, but also a possible campsite location you might want to consider is at Santee State Park , SC. which is located somewhat conveniently off I95 a little south of Florence, SC.

Just some thoughts off the top of my head and obviously I am a fan of SC trips.

We've always stayed at Hunting Island State Park near Beaufort S.C.. And make day trips to Savannah and Charleston and the Bluffton Outlet malls. Agreed, Hilton Head is pretty expensive. And yes Beaufort is very nice and has good coffee; I'm still drinking from some beans I bought at City Java from the Island Coffee Roastery in Charleston.

The park has a great, long beach, lots of hiking/biking trails. It's a good place to kayak and boat/fish too. At some times of the year, there may be no-see-ums (little biting sand flies) but that happens throughout the southern beaches.

Best of all, there's a close by fish boat dock (Gay Fish Co) that sells fresh shrimp in season and other seafood. When there in November, we pretty much live off shrimp.

Just some trivia for folks not from the Carolinas....Beaufort, SC is pronounced "Bew-fert". Beaufort, NC is pronounced "Bo-fert", with a long "O".
